Get To Know My Taste In Music
It seems that questionaires have become a trend among bloggers, and I’m so happy about that. As I explained in my last one, I used to love filling out these kinds of things back in the MySpace days. My friend ShellSharks tagged me in his post where he answers these ten questions, and who am I deny the people what they want.
I did do a similar kind of questionaire in the past, A Music List, but that one was a bit more ephemeral than the questions asked here.
To anybody reading this that might like to make a similar post, I’ve used odesli.co to link to the songs and albums shown here.
The questions
The ten questions posed are as follows:
- What are five of your favorite albums?
- What are five of your favorite songs?
- Favorite Instrument(s)?
- What song or album are you current listening to?
- Do you listen to the radio? If so, how often?
- How often do you listen to music?
- How often do you discover music? And how do you discover music?
- What’s a song or album that you enjoy that you wish had more recognition?
- What’s your favourite song of all time?
- Has your taste in music evolved over the years?
What are five of your favourite albums?
- Give Up by The Postal Service - This album was, for better or worse, a major part of my development as a young man. Again, for better or worse…
- I’m Wide Awake, It’s Morning by Bright Eyes - Another defining album for my teen years. I love me a man wailing while strumming his guitar.
- Splendor & Misery by Clipping. - A masterpiece of an album with a wide range of emotions expressed throughout, all with a sci-fi setting
- Tormato by Yes - This is probably the first album I can really recall ever being aware of. As some of you may know, my dad was a huge Yes fan, so it only makes sense that this album would be at top of my list.
- Vestiges by Rav - An album of indie rapper Rav’s early works. I love this album for both its goofiness, as well as the pop culture references throughout it.
Honorable Mentions
I can’t just pick five! Here are some others that I really wanted to include:
- Heave Yer Skeleton by Mr. Gnome - A local folk band, their music has such a soothing eeriness to it.
- Wanderlust by The Quick Brown Fox - Honestly, I could put a dozen Lapfox albums here, and still have to narrow the list down. Wanderlust is a dreamy retro-digital speedcore album
- The Ladder by Yes - Another one constantly on loop during my childhood. It was a toss up between this or Tormato.
What are five of your favourite songs?
- Transvestites Can be Cannibals Too by Harley Poe - Gender euphoria
- Mommy by R.I.P, Nick Stratton - An absolutely heart wrenchingly beautiful blues guitar solo
- Spinning Wheel by Worthikids - Never have I heard a song before that so aptly put how it feels to be addicted the past
- Two Against One by Danger Mouse, Daniele Luppi, Jack White - I saw the music video for this on Adult Swim one night, and it was an immediate favourite
- There’s Only Forgiveness by John Reuben - One of those songs for when you’re just fumin’ mad
Favourite Instrument(s)?
Is gun an instrument? Of course not, but I do love any song that uses gunshots in it.

Other than that, I’d say anything in the violin family.
What Song Or Album Are You Currently Listening To?
Today I’ve been playing my Nostalgia playlist, so a lot of Yes, a lot of The Postal Service, and a lot of Relient K. I’ve also been digging Andre 3000’s New Blue Sun album.
Do You Listen To The Radio? If So, How Often?
I only listen to the radio if there are no other options, which is very rarely. I have CD’s in my car for when I don’t have my phone for music, and I’ll sooner listen to the same CD 12 times over than listen to the radio.
How Often Do You Listen To Music?
Pretty much all the time? During the work day, I’m only not listening to music during the lunch hour, and during meetings. Outside of work, I’m listening if I’m driving, if I’m doing the dishes or cooking, and usually while I’m playing video games. It’s also not uncommon for me to put on Curtis Schweitzer’s Starbound soundtrack while I fall asleep.
How Often Do You Discover Music? And How Do You Discover Music?
I listen to Spotify’s Discover Weekly at least once a week, and that’s my biggest source of music discovery. Outside of that, I tend to learn about new music through my partner.
What’s A Song Or Album That You Enjoy That You Wish Had More Recognition?
Harley Poe’s album Horrorful is a masterpiece of an album that more people deserve to know about it.
What’s Your Favourite Song Of All Time?
Furthermore’s Letter To Myself. The first memory of this song was when I was in fourth grade. I couldn’t even understand the reality of what the song was about, but something about it spoke to me. I listen to this song whenever I’m feeling at my lowest, and it helps me bounce back from those bad feelings.
Has Your Taste In Music Evolved Over The Years?
But of course! My taste in music was originally set by my sister when she loaded my iPod up with The Postal Service, The Decemberists, Panic! At The Disco, and other similar artists of the 2000’s. Over time I leaned more toward electronica, with Crystal Castles, and then during my late teens and early 20’s, I was really into speedcore thanks to Lapfox.
I feel like I’ve mellowed out in the past couple years. By which I mean, I don’t really listen to much of any one thing. While you could learn a lot about me from listening to my playlists, I don’t think you’d find any one category of music.
Closing Thoughts
With my flavour of autism, I find it hard to put my feelings to words, but I can usually find a song that, to me, perfectly puts to words how I feel. Because of this, I’ll often use music to control my feelings. If I want to feel sad, I’ll intentionally listen to songs that remind me why I’m sad. If I want to be more energetic, I’ll put of some hyper pop or something similar.
To keep the trend going, I tag the following folk to give the post a try.
